April Renee Harris is a 2007 graduate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies. Her particular concentration area was Child and Adolescent Development with a minor in Public Health. She hopes to pursue her education and obtain a Master's degree in Special Education. She has always had a passion to work with children with special needs and on June 1, 2007 she will begin working with the Partnership for Children in Reidsville, NC.
The 22-year-old daughter of Linda Harris, April resides in Stoneville, NC where she was a 2003 graduate of Dalton McMichael High School. She is one of four children and has two sisters and a younger brother. She loves and values her family and enjoys spending time with them as much as possible.
April began singing as a young girl in church and is active in the music ministry in her church where she sings weekly. She was also involved in choir throughout her elementary, middle and high school years. She won the award for highest score in talent at the Miss Rockingham County Scholarship Pageant in November of 2006. Her talent for the Miss North Carolina Pageant in Raleigh of June, 2007 will also be a vocal performance.
While representing Rockingham County, April has actively promoted her platform issue of "Learning in the Early Years" which emphasizes the importance of high quality early childhood education for every child. She states, "I hope to increase our community's awareness of the Smart Start programs that are offered throughout the county and work to increase the funding of these programs as well. It is important to me to see that every child has a learning-filled experience in their early years so that we can build stronger and brighter futures for the children in North Carolina".
